Through its "Haith Al-Insan" program in its seventh season, Tawakkol Karman Foundation launched a project to rehabilitate a literacy center in Badu Al-Nouhi area, Mifaa district, Hadramout governorate, aiming to combat illiteracy among women in this remote region with limited access to education.
Badu Al-Nouhi is one of many areas where women face a severe lack of educational opportunities. Social norms and the absence of educational facilities have left many women with only oral knowledge passed down through generations.
Umm Fahd, a local woman, shared her experience: "Because I can't read or write, I can’t help my children with their studies. I wasn’t able to attend school when I was young—education for girls wasn’t encouraged, and there were no schools nearby."
Ghareeba Yasslam, a teacher at the center, explained: "This center was established to tackle the high illiteracy rate in the area. The goal is to teach mothers how to educate their children and empower them to manage both their religious and everyday affairs. But we face many challenges—leaks from the ceiling when it rains, a shortage of desks, and lack of proper restrooms."
In response, Tawakkol Karman Foundation stepped in to provide a safer and more supportive learning environment. The rehabilitation included roof repairs, electricity installation, new restrooms, and desks for teachers.
Sheikha Awad, one of the beneficiaries, expressed her gratitude: "Our joy with this center is beyond words. This project has helped eliminate ignorance and spread education in our area. Now we can teach our children and understand our faith and our lives better. Thanks to these improvements, the center is a much better place to learn. We thank Tawakkol Karman Foundation and the Haith Al-Insan program for everything they’ve done."
