Through its "Haith Al-Insan" program in its seventh season, Tawakkol Karman Foundation carried out a full refurbishment of the female student dormitory at Taiz University, located in Al-Mudhaffar district, after it had been looted and damaged due to the war.
Halima Ahmed, director of the dormitory, explained that the facility serves as a safe haven for female students from various regions, with a capacity of 200 students. The dorm has five floors with 64 rooms spread across seven wings per floor. While it was once in good condition, the war left parts of it destroyed—including the second floor, which was hit by a shell—and much of the furniture was lost. Despite these challenges, the dorm continues to house many top-performing students, especially from the Faculty of Medicine.
Halima emphasized that for many young women from rural areas, the dormitory offers not just accommodation, but a stable and secure environment that becomes like home during their years of study.
She also noted the urgent need to replace worn-out bedding, pillows, and sheets, which has now been met, bringing a renewed sense of comfort and optimism among the residents.
Wijdan Ameen, one of the students, stressed how vital the dorm is in ensuring safety and structure for those coming from the countryside. "Without the dorm, we wouldn't have been able to join the university or pursue our dreams," she said, adding that the facility had been looted in previous years and was in dire need of renewal.
In response, Tawakkol Karman Foundation conducted a full assessment of the dormitory’s needs and supplied 30 ovens, bedding sets, curtains, chairs for the study hall, and even flowers and decorative items to improve the overall atmosphere.
Halima expressed deep gratitude, saying the support has brought joy and renewed hope to the students: "This kind of giving is something no one will ever regret."
