Karman Slams Armed Assault on Aden Al-Ghad, Praises Editor’s Defiance
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has denounced the armed assault on the premises of Aden Al-Ghad newspaper in Aden, an attack that resulted in injuries among journalists working at the outlet.
In remarks shared on her official Facebook account, Karman described the incident as a calculated and organized act of violence rather than a random or individual violation. She attributed the attack to armed groups linked to the dissolved Southern Transitional Council, accusing the body of systematically targeting press freedom and undermining citizens’ civil and political rights.
Karman asserted that the militia-backed council bears full legal and moral responsibility for the attack, the well-being of the injured journalists, and the damage inflicted on the newspaper’s facilities.
She further voiced her full solidarity with the Aden Al-Ghad staff and its editor-in-chief, Fathi bin Lazraq, commending his role as a steadfast defender of freedom of expression and the shrinking civic space in Aden.
Highlighting bin Lazraq’s professional courage, Karman said he represents a rare model of journalistic integrity and loyalty to truth, choosing principled resistance over silence at a time when acquiescence would have been safer, despite the serious risks and heavy cost involved.
