Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, stressed the necessity of ensuring that those responsible for committing massacres within the regime of the ousted Bashar al-Assad do not escape prosecution and punishment, as part of a transitional justice process that guarantees non-repetition in the future.
In her official Facebook post, Karman said: "The absolute pardon and forgiveness that seems to be the direction of the Syrian revolution has encouraged the thugs of the fallen Bashar and the remnants of his regime to commit more crimes and attempt to create an immediate counter-revolution."
She added: "To prevent justice from being lost and for criminals to not become accustomed to committing crimes, it is essential that those responsible for the massacres and torture are not allowed to escape prosecution and punishment. However, this must occur within a transitional justice framework that not only ensures accountability but also guarantees non-repetition in the future, while honoring and compensating the victims."
