Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights advocate, Tawakkol Karman, has called for accountability for those responsible for atrocities committed during the regime of deposed President Bashar al-Assad.
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Karman emphasized the critical importance of prosecuting war criminals within a framework of transitional justice to prevent future violations.
Karman warned against the dangers of complacency, noting that the "amnesty and absolute tolerance" perceived in the Syrian revolution have emboldened elements of Assad's regime to perpetrate further violence. She stated, "The remnants of his regime are attempting to create an immediate counter-revolution."
To ensure that justice is served, Karman stressed that perpetrators of massacres and torture must face prosecution and punishment. She advocates for a transitional justice approach that not only holds individuals accountable but also honors and compensates victims, thereby laying the groundwork for a future free from the repetition of such crimes.
