Nobel Peace Prize winner Tawakkol Karman expressed jubilation today following the Syrian opposition's announcement of the liberation of Damascus.  In a post on her official Facebook page, Karman stated, "Damascus is liberated, thank God who made me witness this moment that I have always believed in."

Damascus's liberation comes after the Syrian opposition reported the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad's regime, ending a nearly 24-year rule.  Celebratory scenes unfolded in a major Damascus square and in other cities across Syria, with thousands of Syrians taking to the streets in cars and on foot, chanting for freedom. 

After the Syrian opposition's announcement of Damascus's liberation and the confirmation of President Assad's regime's overthrow, a significant turning point has been reached in the protracted Syrian conflict. 

This shift in power is anticipated to reshape the political landscape of Syria and may usher in a new chapter in the nation’s history. The people there long for a country where freedom and human rights are respected, and where democratic values can thrive.
