Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights advocate, Tawakkol Karman, will participate in a high-level reception on September 26, 2024, in New York City, coinciding with the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly, to discuss the challenges faced by refugees worldwide.
The event, themed "Refugees: At or a Risk?", is organized by Refugees Seeking Equal Access at the Table (R-SEAT), Refugees International, and the United States Refugee Advisory Board, in collaboration with the Mobilisation Lab. It aims to emphasize that refugees are "at risk," not a "risk," highlighting the urgent need for inclusive policies that benefit both states and communities.
Karman will join a panel discussion titled "Shaping Our Future: Facts or Myths? Countering Misinformation and Shaping Refugees’ Futures through Inclusion," alongside UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner Kelly Clements and Canada’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Bob Rae. The panel will focus on the damaging effects of misinformation and fake news, exploring how these false narratives contribute to exclusionary policies and shape public perceptions of refugees.
During her remarks, Karman will underscore the critical need for truth in media and policymaking to foster more inclusive, resilient, and compassionate societies. The reception will also feature prominent voices and artistic elements showcasing refugee stories, aiming to evoke empathy and highlight the positive economic and social impacts of inclusive policies. Together, these discussions seek to reshape public understanding and promote collaborative efforts to support refugees globally.
