Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights fighter Tawakkol Karman has revealed that the Global Oversight Board for Facebook and Instagram has directed Meta to revoke its prohibition on content featuring the word "martyr."
As a member of the Global Oversight Board for Facebook and Instagram, Karman emphasized on her official Facebook page that the board has instructed Meta to rescind the ban on content containing the term "martyr," which had resulted in the blocking of millions of posts and pages.
Karman underscored that the Oversight Board's decision to compel Meta to lift the ban stemmed from its view that the restriction violated freedom of expression. This development comes in the wake of Meta's blanket ban being criticized by the oversight board for being overly broad and unnecessarily suppressing speech, as per its recent year-long review.
