Tawakkol Karman voices concerns over UN Security Council's impact on global peace
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and activist Tawakkol Karman has conveyed strong disapproval regarding decisions made by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) regarding the maintenance of global security and peace.
In an official statement posted on her Facebook page, Karman expressed a perspective on the United Nations Security Council's (UNSC) recent resolution. She remarked, "Had the UNSC resolution against the Houthi rebels yesterday been accompanied by another resolution condemning Israeli massacres and the genocidal war on Gaza, calling for an immediate end to these actions, we would perceive the Security Council as a truly international body genuinely dedicated to upholding global peace and security."
The specific resolution in question, Resolution 2722, was issued by the UNSC on January 11. This resolution urged the Houthi militia in Yemen to immediately cease their attacks on ships, which disrupt not only global trade but also undermine navigational rights, regional peace, and security. While this resolution demonstrates the Council's recognition of the need to address the Houthi rebels' actions, Karman emphasizes that it falls short of addressing other critical issues that demand attention.
Karman's call for the UNSC to address Israeli actions towards Palestine and Gaza is rooted in the belief that a comprehensive approach to global peace and security requires a balanced and impartial stance. By condemning all forms of violence and advocating for immediate action in conflict zones, the UNSC can establish itself as an international body committed to upholding the principles of peace, justice, and human rights.
