Munich Security Conference names Tawakkol Karman among important voices for women's empowerment and struggle for peace
The Munich Security Conference has chosen Tawakkol Karman as an important voice for women's empowerment and the struggle for peace.
Tawakkol Karman, on her official Twitter account, emphasized that her selection by the Munich Security Conference comes as part of its campaign to enhance the representation of women in peace and security.
The conference that includes the defense and foreign ministers from around the world dates back to 1963, and it has often been dubbed a "transatlantic family meeting, given the fact that its members were restricted to Germany, the United States and some NATO countries.
The first edition of the conference witnessed a limited participation of no more than 60 officials, while as of 1999 the number has increased to include representatives from Eastern Europe, India, Japan and China.
