Nonviolence is easiest and only way to lasting victory, Nobel laureate says at global forum
The Nobel Peace Prize winning human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, participated at the "Upswell 2020" through a video conference organized by the Independent Sector under the title "Documentary Series on Nobel Peace Prize: Believe in the Ability to Achieve Your Dream of Being Free".
Tawakkol Karman reviewed her continuous efforts for democracy, human rights, freedom and justice.
She stressed the need to strive for women obtaining their rights, indicating that talking about women means talking about human being.
“There can be no peace and a healthy society under a dictatorship. Likewise, no one can talk about human rights without emphasizing the rights of women and girls”, she added.
Nonviolence, as she affirmed, is the easiest and only way to permanent victory that starts with individual practice, noting that violence can only reinforce and encourage more violence.
Human rights, including the rights of people of color and women, begin with freedom of expression, she continued.
Ms. Karman called on the youth to raise their voices for equality, anti-racism, immigrant rights and women's rights, which would help shed light and raise awareness of justice around the world.
“Young people should continue to pursue their dreams, and struggle for people all over the world,” Karman called.
It is worth noting that the US-based Upswell Forum is a series of convenings for changemakers of all kinds – community organizers, philanthropists, nonprofit leaders, government officials, corporate responsibility professionals and more.
