Nobel Peace Prize Winner and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has met FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva to discuss issues related to peace and food security.
Both sides expressed their shared belief that peace is impossible without food security, and there will be no food security without peace.
Mrs. Karman is a member of the FAO Nobel Peace Laureates Alliance for Food Security and Peace, a group of Nobel laureates who have joined forces to form a “brain trust” to advocate for taking peace into account in all efforts to achieve and maintain food security.
In her remarks in this regard, the human rights advocate hailed FAO Nobel Peace Laureates Alliance for Food Security and Peace as a good step to address problems facing peace and food security.
"We must unite, and our voices should be louder for a world free from poverty, hunger, tyranny and corruption, a world full of justice and fairness, and this is what we in FAO-Nobel Peace Prize Laureates seek to achieve,” Karman said.
She added that members of the alliance will work hard and diligently to achieve post-2015 sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially the goal to create a world free from poverty, hunger, but full of justice and peace;
The ‘FAO-Nobel Peace Laureates Alliance for Food Security and Peace’ was launched on March during a formal event at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
