The Nobel Peace laureate and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has condemned the arrest of 17-year-old Palestinian Ahed Tamimi by Israeli occupation authorities in the West Bank. 

In a statement on Twitter, Karman paid tribute to “the rebellious child” Ahed Tamimi, calling for releasing her and all activists detained by the Israeli occupation.

The Israeli occupation authorities extended the child’s detention period for ten days during a court hearing Wednesday in Ofer, Palestinian media have reported. 

Ahed was has been accused of incitement against the occupation and insulting the Israeli soldiers.

Her fame began in 2012 when a video went viral that showed the then 12-year old with a sparkling peace sign on her t-shirt, yelling at soldiers in English, Hebrew, and Arabic because they arrested her older brother.

That incident and others resulted in her being received by the then Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2012, who awarded her a “Handala Courage Award”.

Israeli media has shared the video widely, accusing Palestinian protesters of seeking to provoke the army into responses which are then filmed.

Naftali Bennett, Israeli Education Minister,  was quoted that Tamimi could face seven years in prison.
