Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights advocate, Tawakkol Karman, has welcomed the Southern Transitional Council (STC) militias' avoidance of repression against peaceful female protesters in the southern city of Aden, describing it as a positive step that should become the norm.
In a statement published on her official Facebook page, Karman expressed her relief that the recent demonstrations by women in Aden, which called for improved public services and an end to widespread corruption, were not met with violence by the STC-affiliated forces. She praised this development as a "positive shift" that reflects the power and legitimacy of peaceful civic action.
Karman voiced her unwavering solidarity with the protesters, commending their courage and the legitimacy of their demands. She further extended her support to the women leading parallel demonstrations in Taiz, applauding their participation and resilience in the face of political and economic adversity.
Concluding her remarks, Karman declared, “Glory and victory to all the female protesters,” in a statement of encouragement to the women defying repression across Yemen.
