Nobel laureate in interview with Al-Jazeera: Arab coalition in Yemen turns into treacherous occupation force
The Saudi-led Arab coalition is no longer a supporter of legitimacy in Yemen, but it has become a treacherous occupation force, said the Nobel Peace laureate and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Karman emphasized that what is going on in Aden is not something new, adding that those who helped to take over Yemen’s capital Sanaa and supported the ousted president with billions in 2014 are the ones who today seek to bring Aden into chaos.
She pointed out that the military intervention carried out by Saudi Arabia and the UAE has turned from a coalition to support the legitimacy into an aggression on Yemen.
Yemenis are subjected to an unprecedented betrayal, she added, asserting that the Yemeni people will always remember that its neighbors stabbed them in the back.
"Two years ago, we asked Saudi Arabia to prove that it has a real project for Yemen, but it has proved otherwise,” she explained.
Mrs. Karman called for resisting the Saudi-Saudi occupation and for an international human rights move to try Saudi and UAE crown princes on charges of crimes against humanity in Yemen.
President Hadi, she went on, is also largely responsible for what happens to Yemen because of his silence, calling upon him to put an end to the UAE’s role in the military coalition.
The Yemeni Nobel laureate demanded the political forces exiled in Riyadh to leave Saudi Arabia because staying there would mean complicity and a betrayal of the country and higher national interests.
She concluded by saying: “Despite all this, Hadi still has a chance to do something. Conspiracies against Yemen has not stopped since 2011, but what is takin place in Aden has exposed the hidden to the public.”
