Tawakkol Karman: Trump's withdrawal from nuclear deal is a stupid step
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, has described US President Donald Trump's announcement to withdraw from the nuclear agreement with Iran as a stupid step.
Trump’s declaration of America's withdrawal from the nuclear deal with Iran is a stupid step, said Karman on her Facebook account.
“I fear that this decision will only lead to Iran acquiring a nuclear weapon," she added.
Immediately after US President Trump’s decision, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his disappointment in a tweet.
“France, Germany, and the UK regret the U.S. decision to leave the JCPOA. The nuclear non-proliferation regime is at stake,” tweeted Macron.
He stressed that the European governments will work collectively on a broader framework, covering nuclear activity, the post-2025 period, ballistic activity, and stability in the Middle-East, notably Syria, Yemen, and Iraq.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic Republic would remain in the deal for now and open negotiations with the remaining signatories about preserving it.
Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States said the kingdom, Iran's main rival in the Middle East, fully supported the measures taken by Trump.
"With regards to the deal, we are on auto pilot heading towards a mountain," Ambassador Khalid bin Salman said in a series of tweets.
