Tawakkol Karman calls on government to provide emergency relief assistance to victims in Socotra
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, called on the Yemeni government to do what is necessary to help the victims of the Socotra archipelago affected by Cyclone Mekunu.
"I call on the Yemeni government to provide emergency relief assistance to Socotra’s people affected by Mekunu," said Mrs. Karman in a statement on Twitter.
She warned against any attempt to justify the UAE occupation under the pretext of the disaster that struck the island.
According to CNN, More than 45 people were unaccounted in Socotra afternoon after Cyclone Mekunu hit the island.
The state-run news agency Saba quoted government spokesman, Rajeh Badi, as saying that Socotra province is "stricken with human and material damages at all levels."
