In article in Washington Post ... Tawakkol Karman: We are fed up, war must end
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman stressed the need to end the war in Yemen, hold Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates accountable and compensate Yemen for the damage they caused.
"Stop the war in Yemen," he said in an article published today in the Washington Post.
"You have to tell Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the Houthis with one voice: Enough.”
The United States and other countries must stop arms exports to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The Security Council will issue a resolution calling for an immediate end to the war, forcing the Saudis and Emiratis to withdraw from Yemen. The United Nations should sponsor a political process that begins by binding all parties to the conflict to disarm their militias.
This will allow Yemen to resume the political process, which has been stalled by the coup, Tawakkol Karman said.
"The United Nations should oversee the formation of a national unity government that will organize a referendum on the draft constitution and prepare for new elections," Karman said, pointing to the need to establish a national reconciliation commission to take the responsibility of compensating war victims.
Karman pointed out that the Houthis should be forced to stop their destructive actions and prevent them from receiving any weapons or other support from Iran, pointing out that it is an extremist group that is strongly hostile to civil values, it committed countless violations of human rights and crimes and believes in a theocratic ideology that grants them a divine and exclusive right to rule.
