In article published in Time magazine, Tawakkol Karman: The war in Yemen must end
The human rights activist and Nobel Peace laureate Tawakkol Karman called for the full withdrawal of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates from Yemen and for the end of Iranian support for the Houthi militia.
In an article entitled "Yemen Is the World's Worst Humanitarian Crisis. Here's How to End it," Tawakkol Karman emphasized that Yemen must be a country run by and for Yemenis, and that the preservation of its unity, independence and integrity are paramount.
She also called for the disarmament of militias, and referred the need for the Central Bank of Yemen to consistently pay public servants who have not received their salary for nearly two years.
“To rebuild the country, a fund needs to be established to finance and support the state’s public budget for the next five years or until such time as the country recovers sufficiently,” she stressed.
The Nobel laureate said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would have to fund reconstruction efforts, as partial compensation for the damage caused by their devastating intervention in Yemen.
"More money should not be spent on bombs than on lifesaving aid," Karman said.
“Yemen must be addressed through broad transitional justice measures, which are grounded in accountability and redress for victims.”
“The U.N. and the international community must be steadfast and dedicated to achieving its promises and poised to take action against any party who fails to honor commitments,” she stressed.
