Mass Displacement Reported in Lebanon Following Israeli Airstrikes and Evacuation Orders
Beirut — More than 300,000 people have been displaced within less than 100 hours in Lebanon following a wave of Israeli airstrikes and evacuation orders issued across southern Lebanon, the southern suburbs of Beirut, and other populated areas, according to Lebanese authorities.
Large numbers of civilians have fled their homes amid continuing bombardment. Public buildings, including schools and community facilities, are now serving as emergency shelters and are reportedly overcrowded. Airstrikes have struck residential neighborhoods and commercial areas, causing extensive destruction, particularly in parts of southern Beirut.
Lebanese authorities report that more than 100 people have been killed and at least 638 others injured since Monday, while over 529 Israeli strikes have been recorded across the country.
Women Journalists Without Chains condemned the mass evacuation orders and warned that compelling civilians to leave their homes while attacks continue raises serious concerns under international humanitarian law.
The organization stressed that large-scale evacuation directives issued without safe corridors, adequate shelters, or protection guarantees risk constituting forcible transfer, which is prohibited under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
Women Journalists Without Chains also warned that strikes affecting homes, shops, and civilian infrastructure raise serious concerns regarding compliance with the core principles of international humanitarian law, including distinction, proportionality, and military necessity.
The organization called for the immediate protection of civilians and urged the international community to intensify efforts to prevent further harm and ensure accountability for violations committed during the hostilities.
