Political Retaliation in Aden: A Threat to Press Freedom
Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) is closely following the case of Yemeni journalist Abdulrahman Anis, who appeared on Sunday morning, November 9, 2025, before the Press, Publications, and Electronic Publishing Prosecution Office in Aden Governorate.
This appearance comes in response to an official complaint filed by the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC), which has reportedly appointed a legal team of four lawyers to pursue the case against him.
WJWC affirms that the prosecution of journalist Abdulrahman Anis represents a grave assault on press freedom and a blatant violation of the public’s right to know—fundamental rights enshrined in Yemen’s constitution and protected under international law, particularly Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, both of which guarantee freedom of opinion and expression without intimidation or reprisal.
WJWC expresses its full solidarity with Abdulrahman Anis in the face of the harassment and pressure he endures for his bold and principled journalism that exposes corruption and defends truth. Targeting journalists for their professional work does not conceal wrongdoing; it only reinforces their determination to reveal it and strengthens the public’s trust in their mission.
WJWC demands an immediate halt to all legal proceedings against journalists for their legitimate journalistic activities and calls on the competent authorities in Aden to honor their constitutional and international commitments to safeguard freedom of expression and the independence of the press.
The organization further urges local, regional, and international human rights bodies to stand in solidarity with Abdulrahman Anis and all journalists who continue to speak truth to power in Yemen despite escalating campaigns of intimidation and retaliation.
