The Houthi militia has abducted writer and author Abdulwahab al-Harasi, a member of the Yemeni Writers Union, in Dhamar Governorate. Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) strongly condemned this act, calling it a flagrant violation of freedom of expression and part of a disturbing pattern of systematic targeting of intellectuals, journalists, and activists.
According to information obtained by WJWC, al-Harasi was physically assaulted on March 3, 2025, by members of the Houthi leader "Abu Sajad al-Shakri" while in a market in Dhamar city. He was then forcibly taken to the city's police station before being transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department prison. This abduction follows previous threats against him due to his outspoken criticism of human rights violations on social media.
WJWC denounced this attack in the strongest terms, asserting that it exemplifies the Houthis' broader strategy of repression aimed at silencing independent voices. The organization expressed deep concern for al-Harasi’s safety, given the militia's notorious record of torture and abuse against detainees. There are grave fears that he may be subjected to further mistreatment, especially in the absence of any legal protections for his well-being.
WJWC urged the United Nations and the international community to take decisive action to pressure the Houthis into halting their arbitrary detention campaigns and releasing all abductees. The organization also called on international human rights groups to document this crime as part of the Houthis' systematic violations against journalists and intellectuals.
Concluding its statement, WJWC warned that ongoing impunity only emboldens the Houthi militia to escalate its attacks on journalists, intellectuals, and activists. It urged all relevant parties to take serious steps to hold the perpetrators accountable and put an end to these repressive practices.
