Female writer and son go missing in Saudi capital, prompting calls for answers
It has been one year since writer and activist Samira Al-Houri and her son Ahmed Al-Halili mysteriously vanished in Saudi Arabia, but there are still no answers about their whereabouts or fate.
Sources indicate that Saudi intelligence officers abducted Samira and Ahmed from their Riyadh apartment shortly after Ahmed arrived there from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. However, Saudi authorities have reportedly refused to confirm their detention or file an official missing persons report.
Women's rights organization Women Journalists Without Chains has criticized both Saudi Arabia and Yemen for failing to take action to locate Samira and Ahmed. The organization notes that multiple Yemenis have been detained in Saudi Arabia for their views with no help from the Yemeni government. Samira herself was previously kidnapped and tortured for 3 months by the Houthis in 2019 before her family secured her release. There are strong concerns that Samira and Ahmed are now suffering a similar fate at the hands of Saudi officials, but no proof of their condition or location has emerged.
Women Journalists Without Chains is calling on Saudi Arabia to disclose what happened to Samira and Ahmed, and immediately release them if they are being unlawfully detained. The group also wants Yemen to take responsibility for its citizens in Saudi prisons. Additionally, the organization promises to pursue international legal action against any Saudi officials involved in Samira and Ahmed's disappearance. After one year without answers, all eyes are on Saudi Arabia and Yemen to provide information that could reunite this mother and son.
