Through its "Haith Al-Insan" program in its seventh season, Tawakkol Karman Foundation visited Socotra Archipelago, Yemen’s easternmost governorate, to fulfill the wish of a hardworking young man and enable him to launch his own business—a long-held dream that finally became reality.
Arafat Ahmed, a resident of Socotra, the island often described as the "paradise of the earth," has a story of resilience hidden behind its breathtaking landscapes.
"I have a heart condition and underwent open-heart surgery, which kept me out of work for a year and a half. I rely on continuous treatment, and while I sometimes find medicine at an affordable price in hospitals, other times I have to buy it at much higher costs in the market. What I earn barely covers my family's needs," Arafat said.
He added: "Getting fish isn’t easy. I either have to go to the coast myself or buy from the market, where prices vary. Some fishermen can pay upfront, but those who can’t have to buy on credit, which adds to their financial burden."
Arafat’s wish was simple yet essential—a stable source of income in a convenient location, where he could sell fish, vegetables, chicken, and eggs without having to travel long distances in search of work, especially given his health condition.
A life-changing intervention
In response, the "Haith Al-Insan" team, funded by Tawakkol Karman Foundation, surprised Arafat by turning his wish into reality. A fully equipped shop, named "Thalajat Abu Sultan", was set up and stocked with fresh fish, chicken, yogurt, and eggs, giving him a solid foundation to start his business and expand it in the future.
Overwhelmed with joy, Arafat expressed his deep gratitude, saying: "I can't describe how I feel—it’s as if I own the whole world! This project will completely change my life. I used to constantly worry about affording medicine and household expenses, but now, I won’t have to ask anyone for help. This opportunity has opened doors of goodness for me."
