Through its "Haith Al-Insan" program in its seventh season, Tawakkol Karman Foundation has fulfilled its promise by equipping the computer lab at Taiz University, providing students with a modern and fully functional learning space.
For years, the university’s computer lab housed outdated equipment dating back to the 1990s, making it nearly impossible for students to complete practical coursework. These aging machines, long obsolete even in internet cafes, forced students to either bring their personal devices or rely solely on theoretical learning.
Taiz University's Faculty of Education was established in 1985 as a branch of Sana'a University and became an independent institution in 1994. While its infrastructure and academic programs improved over the years, modernization efforts never reached the computer lab—until now.
A long-standing challenge
Oday Al-Yousifi, a student in the Information Technology department, highlighted the difficulties they faced: "My major relies heavily on computers, but the lab’s devices were so outdated that they were practically useless. Many students had to bring their own laptops, share devices with classmates, or settle for purely theoretical lessons due to the lack of proper equipment."
Shaima Wadhah, a Networks student at Taiz University, echoed the same frustrations: "Since I joined the department, I found that the lab’s computers were too old and insufficient in number for all students to use. I had to rely on my personal laptop, but many students don’t have that option, which created major challenges for them."
The lab’s outdated equipment was also a major concern for faculty members. Engineer Fawzi Al-Qahtani, head of the College of Engineering’s laboratory management, explained: "The computers we’ve been using since 2003 can no longer meet students’ needs in terms of speed or storage. Even modern smartphones are more powerful. Because of this, students can only apply what they learn if they bring their own laptops or take turns using a single device."
A new era for students
Thanks to Tawakkol Karman Foundation, this long-standing issue has finally been addressed. The foundation has fully renovated the computer lab, equipping it with 30 state-of-the-art devices and transforming the space into a modern learning environment.
Faculty members and students expressed their gratitude for this initiative, which has given them access to essential tools for practical training.
"We no longer have to carry our personal laptops," said Oday Al-Yousifi. "Now we have a modern, well-equipped computer lab, and I sincerely thank Tawakkol Karman Foundation for this incredible support."
