As part of its ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Yemeni families and empower them economically, Tawakkol Karman Foundation, through its "Haith Al-Insan" program in its seventh season, has changed the life of Abdullah Musleh, who endured decades of hardship after 41 years away from home.
Since 1994, Abdullah has lived in Marib, working tirelessly in various trades to support his family, who remained in Ibb amid the country’s economic crisis. His days began at dawn with prayer, followed by long hours loading and selling vegetables at the local "Bin Aboud" market—work that lasted until sundown under the scorching sun.
As he aged, his health began to decline, making his physically demanding job increasingly difficult. Like many Yemenis who spent their lives working abroad or away from their families, he longed to secure a different future for his children, ensuring they wouldn’t have to endure the hardships he faced.
"I’ve worked in several jobs before settling on selling vegetables. Life has been tough, and because of the crisis, I couldn’t pay off my debts. I barely manage to provide for my children’s needs," Abdullah said.
He added, "Working under the harsh sun is exhausting, and sometimes my produce would spoil due to the extreme heat. Once, I had to spend all my earnings just to cover medical expenses. Now, as I grow older, I can’t keep up like I used to—I get tired quickly."
For the past eight months, life had become even more unbearable, stretching on like eight years, he recalled. "I endured hunger and relentless pressure just to meet my children’s needs. I continue to work, despite my age, because who else will provide for them?"
Just as he had nearly abandoned hope of a better future, the "Haith Al-Insan" program stepped in to change his life. The team purchased and modified a vehicle, transforming it into a mobile shop that allowed Abdullah to work under far better conditions, free from the punishing heat.
"I spent 25 years pushing my cart through tough conditions, but the moment I received my new vehicle, I forgot all those years of hardship," Abdullah said. "Now, I live a new life—I work comfortably in the shade, with an indescribable sense of happiness and relief. I wake up every day feeling grateful. I sincerely thank Tawakkol Karman Foundation and the 'Haith Al-Insan' program for this life-changing opportunity."
