Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights advocate Tawakkol Karman has denounced the ongoing trial of Yemeni journalist and writer Mohammed Dabwan Al-Mayahi, describing it as a "political farce" that highlights the repressive practices of the Houthi militia.
In a strongly worded statement posted to her official Facebook page, Karman asserted that the Houthis "fear words and criticism, which expose their falsehoods," emphasizing that Al-Mayahi's prosecution is emblematic of a broader campaign by the group to silence dissenting voices.
Karman noted that this was the reason behind Mohammed Dabwan Al-Mayahi's imprisonment and explained that the ruling authority continues to target others like him—those who dare to speak the truth and resist injustice.
Al-Mayahi, known for his critical writing and his advocacy for democratic freedoms, has faced increasing harassment and censorship under the group’s de facto rule in Sanaa. His trial has sparked widespread condemnation among Yemeni activists and human rights organizations, who argue that it lacks any semblance of due process.
Karman expressed full support for Al-Mayahi, lauding his courage and determination. "I express my full solidarity with Mohammed Dabwan Al-Mayahi," she wrote. "His resilience embodies the Yemeni people's aspirations for freedom and dignity."
The Nobel laureate also voiced confidence in the Yemeni people's ability to overcome authoritarianism and reclaim their sovereignty. “The people of Yemen will put an end to this crisis,” she declared, “and they will write a new chapter—one free of tyranny and oppression—in place of the suffering imposed by the Houthi authorities in Sanaa and beyond.”
