Nobel Peace Prize laureate and activist Tawakkol Karman has expressed optimism that the recent election of a new president in Lebanon may signal the decline of Hezbollah's dominance over the Lebanese state and its ties to Tehran.
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Karman remarked, "We hope that the election of a president for Lebanon will mark the beginning of the end of Hezbollah’s kidnapping of the Lebanese state and its occupation by Tehran."
The Lebanese parliament has elected Army Commander General Joseph Aoun as the country's president, securing 99 votes out of 128, after a prolonged presidential vacancy that lasted two years, two months, and ten days.
