Karman speaks out against arrest of Tunisia's Ennahda movement leader
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, has deemed the arrest of Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia's Ennahda movement, as the latest chapter in his storied struggle for freedom. Ghannouchi now faces charges of contending for freedom itself.
Tawakkol Karman said on her official Facebook page: "The true charge against the fighter Rached Ghannouchi is his struggle for freedom and his fight against extremism. His arrest by Kais Saied adds a new chapter even more wonderful to his great and long struggle. "
She added, "When tyrants like Kais Saied rule the palace, it is natural for great fighters and thinkers like Rached Ghannouchi to be in jail or in exile."
Tunisia's opposition Ennahda movement has announced that its leader, Rached Ghannouchi, was detained on Monday evening by a security unit that raided his home in the capital and took him to an "unknown location," considering what happened a "very serious development" and calling for "his immediate release and an end to the violation of opposition political activists."
Ghannouchi is arguably the most prominent antagonist of President Kais Saied, who has monopolized power since 2021. Ennahda's leader once served as parliament's speaker, until Saied dissolved the assembly in 2022.
Notably, Ennahda belongs to the opposition "National Salvation Front," alongside other factions denouncing Saied as a "coup against the 2014 revolution and constitution."
