Karman urges terrorist classification for Sudanese Hemedti and his militias
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has called on international parties to stand with the Sudanese army and classify Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, known as "Hemedti," and his militias as a terrorist group.
In a post on her official Facebook page, Karman said, "I believe that Hemedti and the Janjaweed militias will return to Darfur to practice the crimes they were raised on, otherwise they will be defeated in all states."
Additionally, Karman stated that Hemedti should be held accountable for committing atrocities against humanity and imprisoned, while his militias should be dissolved as terrorist organizations.
She criticized his appointment as a vice president and sponsor of the transitional process, highlighting the urgent need for justice and accountability.
Karman affirmed that any international party that wants to help Sudan will have to stand with its army and classify Hemedti and his militias as a terrorist group.
Yesterday morning, clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces erupted in several states across the country, including the capital Khartoum.
The conflict involved the use of heavy and light weaponry by both sides, and details about the extent of the violence and any casualties are currently unknown.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) were initially created in 2013 to combat rebel groups in Sudan's western Darfur region. Subsequently, their mandate was expanded to include border protection and the maintenance of law and order.
The RSF is affiliated with the country's security and intelligence apparatus, and its estimated number of members exceeds tens of thousands, though there is no official estimate.
The disagreement between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces has had an impact on the signing of the final agreement for the political process in Sudan.
The agreement, which was initially scheduled to be signed on April 5, has been postponed indefinitely due to the differences between the two groups.
Dagalo had played a prominent role in the 2019 Sudanese Revolution that ousted former President Omar al-Bashir and was a key member of the Transitional Military Council that took control of the country after al-Bashir's removal.
