Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, has warned against Saudi Arabia's attempts to mediate the Yemeni crisis and shift its position from being the main party to the conflict to that of a mediator.
Her remarks come amidst recent developments between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi rebels, which are part of a larger Saudi-Iranian settlement sponsored by China.
Karman criticized Saudi Arabia for seeking to "settle" the Yemeni crisis after eight years of war and destruction, and accused it of seeking to wash its hands and present itself as a "kind and humanitarian" mediator.
On her official Facebook page, she wrote: "Saudi Arabia sponsored the Southern Transitional Council in Aden, supported it and empowered it until it became strong enough to wage war against the legitimate government in Yemen. Then, Saudi Arabia acted as a mediator and sponsored two consecutive agreements, both of which resulted in the formation of a council that represents the biggest insult to Yemen and presents the most despicable version of traitors with their different titles."
Karman continued by saying that after completing eight years of war on Yemen, Saudi Arabia has come to Sana'a to complete the settlement of the Yemeni crisis by whitewashing its role and turning itself into "a good and humanitarian mediator."
“If the Yemenis were to acquit Saudi Arabia of its conspiracy and war on Yemen and turn it into a "mediator," history would say they deserve everything that has happened to them, such as the war, siege, and organized destruction of their country,” she added
Karman concluded by calling for a neutral mediator between the Yemenis on one hand, and Saudi Arabia, Iran, and their proxies on the other, noting that the latter should be held accountable for everything that has happened in Yemen over the past eight years, as well as the overthrow of the Yemeni state and the failure of the transitional period that preceded the war.
It is worth noting that this statement comes in the context of recent developments between Saudi Arabia and the Houthi coup group, which are related to the Saudi-Iranian settlement sponsored by China. Iran is the main supporter of the Houthi militia, and its involvement in the Yemeni crisis is one of the main reasons why the war has lasted for so long.
