Tawakkol Karman at MSC-2022: Women will never be tool to beautify face of dictators and tyrants
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, said that she attended the Munich Security Conference-2022 to be a voice to express peoples and all those dreaming of democracy, freedom, justice and the rule of law.
Tawakkol Karman indicated that while many participants came as representatives of their countries and governments, the voices expressing peoples and human rights in general and women in particular are few, stressing that came the conference to be the voice of people everywhere and of all those struggling for justice and freedom, and dedicating themselves to combatting corruption, tyranny and terrorism.
During a panel discussion entitled "Women’s Agency in Conflict and Humanitarian Crises" on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Tawakkol Karman stressed that repression in all its forms did not, and will not, frighten her nor divert her from advocating human rights issues.
She continued that if there is anything she is afraid of, it is to lose hope in the peaceful struggle for freedom, justice and democracy, adding that such thing further strengthens her determination and will towards defending human rights and carrying out her role as a woman towards her local and global community until the relevant noble goals are achieved.
With regard to the role of women and their right to be co-decision-makers, Mrs. Karman sent a message to democratic governments that claim to support gender equality and human rights that women’s rights are part of human rights, a thing which requires the promotion of democracy and the right of expression, and the right of peoples to choose their rulers.
She addressing those governments by saying that human rights are more than just giving some parliamentary seats or ministerial portfolios to (X) or (Z) of women for nothing but a way to beautify the face of tyranny, calling all women to reject all attempts to use them as tools of tyrants and dictatorships.
Regarding the role of the Corona pandemic in promoting inequality in the Arab countries, then Nobel laureate confirmed that the pandemic had a significant impact on the whole world, albeit to varying degrees, pointing out that although the pandemic remains a health issue in democratic countries, repressive and dictatorial regimes have taken it as a tool to practice more injustice, repression and censorship and tighten their grip in dealing with their people.
She also stated that Yemen is not only suffering from the corona, but also has become home to several critical diseases and other challenges like poverty, hunger and the absence of various basic services due to the destructive war there.
She stressed that justice and democracy are the basic demand for women in the Middle East in general and in Arab countries in particular, noting that Arab women are aware of the risks and challenges to their way but are ready to make sacrifices for this.
She added that the question that presents itself and requires the conferees at the Munich event to answer on is how far should women and other groups of society in the region make sacrifices in order for them to have a serious and firm stance towards tyranny and stop supporting tyrannical regimes?
Regarding her work on Facebook's oversight board, Tawakkol Karman said that she is there to express the voice of the people as well, noting that social media platforms should not be allowed to be used as means for tyrannical governments to lunch their smear campaigns against opponents and huma rights activists and defenders.
On her message to young women looking to struggle against inequality, Karman said that they should always take the lead, give priority of struggle to their societies, work as leaders, not care about obstacles on their way, have self-confidence, strive to achieve their ambitious projects, and work as part of the political movement, whether through political parties, civil society organizations or the media, to combat corruption, injustice and tyranny.
