Describing it as terror act, Tawakkol Karman strongly condemns shouting of Russia’s Andrei Karlov
The human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Tawakkol Karman has strongly condemned the killing of the Russian Ambassador to Turkey, Andrei Karlov, describing the murder as terrorist act.
Karman, in a post shared on social media early today, said she condemns in the strongest possible terms the shouting of Andrei Karlov in Ankara, considering it a terror act.
Russian diplomat Andrei Karlov on Monday was gunned down in Ankara as the killer, named by the Turkish authorities as an off-duty policeman Mevlut Mert Altintas, opened fire on him at an art gallery.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin and, in a video message, said that they both agreed it was an act of "provocation", noting that he had agreed with his Russian counterpart to intensify cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
For his part, Mr Putin said, in televised remarks, the act was "undoubtedly a provocation aimed at disrupting the normalisation" of bilateral ties and the "peace process in Syria".
The Associated Press reported that the gunman was shouting, "We die in Aleppo, you die here" and "don't forget about Aleppo, don't forget about Syria, Allahu Akbar.”
