Tawakkol Karman: Arab Spring is archenemy of terrorism, and the turning wheel of change will not stop
The wheel of change in the Arab Spring countries has turned and will not stop before turning the page of tyranny, oppression, prisons, arrogance, discrimination and corruption, said the human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman.
In a speech delivered at Oxford University on 7 February, Karman stressed, "Terrorism is neither a part of the Arab uprisings nor of the Arab Spring forces."
"The Arab Spring is an archenemy of terrorism in terms of thought, behaviour and goals. It is an established fact that needs no evidence,” she added.
Mrs. Karman noted that the roots of the terrorism phenomenon in the Middle East goes back to of the oppression and betrayal of the Arab Spring revolutions and the conspiracy against them by coups and counter- revolutions.
“By supporting tyrannies and sustaining them with all means and tools of oppression, Daesh has come to life,” she explained.
The mother of revolution said addressing the western governments, “You have also replaced the Arab Spring with the spring of Iranian mullahs who has already taken over Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, and has extended south to Yemen and still keeps expanding in different directions.
The biggest-ever favor the world could provide to terrorism propping despotism, blocking the means of peaceful change, failing to support moderate religious groups, and dealing with all as “one size fits all”, Mrs. Karman continued.
She has also strongly US President Trump who described Islam as terrorism, wondering how could anyone possibly describe an entire religion with 1.7 billion followers as a terrorist religion?
“Such a speech based on hatred makes the road passable for terrorist groups, and opens the door to ISIS and its ilk, while it weakens the forces of moderation. However, the will of our Islamic nation is stronger than this evil scheme,” she pointed out.
She has also called on global activists, intellectuals, politicians and the media to recall the inspiring struggles of past heroes who fought for human’s civil rights, urging that all shall continue the march now to challenge terror, the discourse of hate, and all other animosity and intolerance..
Finally, the Nobel laureate concluded by saying, “We all have to lead this battle within a global struggle for coexistence, love and peace so as to avoid any conflict between Muslims and the West for religious reasons the way Trump’s administration is fueling.”
