The human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has called upon the international community to send urgent international assistance to Yemen after the war has created a major food crisis. 

In this context, Karman has pointed out to the coup of 2014 led by Houthi-Saleh alliance who undermined the building of democracy in Yemen.

In a speech delivered at a conference held today in the German city Dortmund on civil wars and hybrid peace in the post-colonial period, Mrs. Karman stressed the need to provide international aid to prevent starvation in the war-torn Yemen.

Karman noted that the Arab Spring is a peaceful struggle against corruption and tyranny, rejecting any attempts to make people choose dictatorship but freedom and democracy instead of terrorism. 

Rather than supporting dictators and authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, the international community has to make them uphold values of human rights, freedom, dignity and democracy in their countries, the Nobel Winner added. 

She also stressed the need for transitional justice that respects the rights of victims, pointing out that there is no peace without justice.

Dictators are not expected to fight terrorism, as they are two sides of the same coin, she continued. 

Karman, who is one of the most prominent faces of The Arab Spring, confirmed that injustice and tyranny have been the main reasons behind terrorism and floods of refugees.  

She blamed the international community for backing the counter-revolutions in the Middle East, saying "People in the region have suspected the international community of having allied with the dictators."

Finally, the building of democracy in Yemen ruined immediately after the coup took place on 21 September 2014 with support from Teheran.
