Commenting on US airstrikes on Bashar al-Assad's regime’s military base, the human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has called on the international community to whatever needed to protect the Syrian people. 

"Everything must be done to protect the people in Syria," Tawakkol Kerman said in a speech at the inaugural session of a conference on Democracy and Human Rights in the Arab Region held in Oregon.

Karman started her speech by urging all attendants to have a moment of mourning for “the victims of Bashar al-Assad’s chemical massacre in Khan Shaykhun, and for the lives of the hundreds of thousands killed by his regime under a shameful, humiliating and painful silence of the world.”

“Achieving peace is not limited to ending wars, but also to stopping oppression and injustice,” she added, noting that every dictator is a terrorist and vice versa. 

The mother of Yemen’s revolution pointed out that tyranny and terrorism are two sides of the same coin, and that they feed on the same quagmire and protect each other. 

"Support peoples’ rights to elect their rulers is a global responsibility," she concluded.
