The human rights activist and Nobel Peace laureate Tawakkol Karman has strongly condemned the assassination of a young political activist by unidentified gunmen on Sunday in Yemen’s temporarily capital of Aden.
Mrs. Karman, in a statement shared on her official Facebook page, said that Amjad was murdered by “sinful hands.”
Amjad engaged in political and cultural activities and established a cultural center in the port city of Aden.
Gunmen fired a barrage of bullets at him, focusing on the areas of head and neck while he was in an Internet cafe in the city of Sheikh Osman, according to local sources.
The dead activist’s friends have suggested that the murder incident may be related to his intellectual and political activity, and that extremist groups are likely behind the operation.
Although nearly two years have passed since Aden was liberated from the Houthi militia and forces loyal to ousted president Saleh, which had taken it over in the first half of 2015, the city Aden is experiencing security chaos and the spread of militants in the streets due to the inability of the city’s security authorities to take full control of the situation.
