Tawakkol Karman calls for commissions of inquiry into enforced disappearance in Yemen’s UAE-controlled areas
The human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laurate Tawakkol Karman has renewed her condemnation of abductions and enforced disappearances done in Yemen’s southern provinces under the supervision of the UAE forces.
In a statement posted on her Facebook page, Karman said that the UAE detention centers in southern provinces are full of the cases of abductions and enforced disappearances, pointed out that these crimes are increasing daily despite the rejection and condemnation by international human rights organizations.
She noted that such acts, which fall within crimes against humanity, are added to the UAE's record of violations in Yemen, calling for independent, impartial and credible commissions of inquiry to investigate these crimes.
In recent report, Human Rights Watch has mentioned that The UAE supports Yemeni forces that have arbitrarily detained, forcibly disappeared, tortured, and abused dozens of people during security operations.
HRW also pointed out that the UAE runs at least two informal detention facilities, and its officials appear to have ordered the continued detention of people despite release orders, and forcibly disappeared people.
