Nobel Peace laureate and human rights advocate Tawakkol Karman arrived today in the Colombian capital of Bogota to participate in the "21st Century Thinking" conference hosted by at the Autonomous University of the Caribbean (la Universidad Autónoma del Caribe).
At the conference held during the period from 22-25 August, Karman will talk about the issue of "truth, communication and peace". She is also scheduled to attend a meeting of Colombian youth activists, according to the Colombian newspaper El Heraldo.
The conference, which will discuss several key issues, including populism and new democratic challenges in a liberal society, will be also attended by local and international political and academic figures, including the ex-president of Mexico Vicente Fox and Guatemalan politician Gloria Álvarez, a well-known supporter of left-wing Latin American governments.
According to Roxana Buitrago, director of the International Relations Office at la Universidad Autónoma del Caribe, the conference aims to inform participants about the global ideas on the issues concerning populism, challenges of democracy in liberal societies.
