The human rights advocate and Nobel Peace laureate Tawakkol Karman today criticized the Burmese Prime Minister, Aung San Suu Kyi, for her silence over the massacres against the Muslim Rohingya in Burma.

"The entire world now condemns our colleague Aung San Suu Kyi for her silence, especially as she is in a position of great responsibility where she is supposed to take at least a clear position against horrific crimes committed against the Rohingya population," said Tawakkol Karman in a statement to Al Jazeera.

"We as members of the Nobel Women's Initiative strongly condemn this silence, and have already appealed to her, and will keep doing so, to carry out its duties,” Karman explained. 

She noted that her colleague, Aung San Suu Kyi, provides the political cover to the military rule that governs from behind the scenes. 

"Our colleague Aung San Suu Kyi must now stop being merely a decoration for the military rule that carries out those massacres through the army and the police," Karman concluded.
