Coup of militia brings Yemen into terrible chaos, Tawakkol Karman says at Nobel Peace Center in Norway
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Tawakkol Karman has blamed the Iranian-backed Houthi militia and forces loyal to ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh for undermining the transitional process in Yemen and bringing the whole country into terrible chaos.
"We were only a few months away from a referendum on the new draft constitution and then go to various elections," stated Karman in a lecture at the Nobel Peace Center in the Norwegian capital of Oslo.
"The fascist coup has overthrown the transition process and brought the country into the midst of all this mess,” she added.
She pointed out that the Saudi Arabia-led Arab coalition, which began its military operations in March 2015, has come to Yemen under the pretext of supporting the legitimacy and restoring its authority.
“But we see nothing of this except for sharing of the takeover of the country with the putschists and killing as many civilians as possible.”
Mrs. Karman also shed light on the challenges in Yemen, reviewing her career until she won the Nobel Peace Prize and asserting that women can lead the world if they are empowered.
"Despite chaos and darkness in Yemen, people always have a hope and desire to fight for democracy.”
She stressed that the Arab Spring did not die, and the leaders of change have never lost hope, but they are still fighting to open the doors for future generations.
A Nobel laureate has to be in the first ranks to fight for justice, human rights and the values of the Nobel Prize, and not be afraid of any consequences, she emphasized.
