Karman calls for respecting Yemen’s sovereignty and international tribunal for Yemen
"Yemen: Challenges of War and Opportunities for Peace", organized by the Tawakkol Karman Foundation in the Turkish city of Istanbul, called for respect to the sovereignty of Yemen and the establishment of an international court for Yemen to consider war crimes.
The participants in the conference, entitled "Yemen: Challenges of War and Opportunities for Peace" called on them to work hard and responsibly to end the war and to achieve peace in a way that preserves Yemen's security and sovereignty in accordance with the contents of the comprehensive national dialogue conference.
They stressed that the state is the guarantor of security and stability, and that chaos, war and the spread of armed militias are a natural result of the absence of the state, demanding that no armed or unarmed form, opposed to the state project, are allowed to remain or be granted a special legitimacy.
"It is important to establish an international court for Yemen, which considers all crimes committed by local and international parties of the conflict," the statement issued by the conference said.
It has also called for the immediate lifting of blockade on Yemeni airports and ports without delay and ending the blockade on the province of Taiz, the largest city in Yemen in terms of the population.
The statement pointed to the need to "begin preparations for referendum on the draft constitution approved by the Yemeni parties, and the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections under the auspices of the United Nations to transfer power in a peaceful and legitimate manner."
"The countries involved in the conflict, in addition to the friendly countries, should take important steps in helping Yemen to build up the war-devastated cities, in addition to keeping the Yemeni situation under the international observation until elections are held in accordance with the new constitution,” the statement said. It said that the international sponsorship should include assistance to the Yemeni people to overcome this war and fears of any war in future.
The statement recommended "the establishment of a national body to address the damages and compensates the victims.”
