Tawakkol Karman: International community stands by as spectator in face of crackdown on Iraq’s peaceful demonstrations
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Tawakkol Karman has criticized the international community’s non-action on the crackdown on the Iraqi peaceful demonstrations, expressing her disappointment with “such shameful position”.
In a statement on Twitter, Mrs. Karman wrote to say that Iraqis are making great sacrifices by continuing their non-violent demonstrations while the world stands idly by, doing nothing to stop the governmental forces abuses against the peaceful protest marches.
“They will continue ignoring you, making fun of you and fighting you but in the end, you will win”, she said.
In the capital, Baghdad, thousands of protesters have defied a curfew to demand jobs, better public services and an end to corruption.
Mass protests in Baghdad and other cities in the south, a Shi'ite stronghold, erupted due to economic difficulties early this month and resumed on Friday after a two-week hiatus.
