Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights advocate Tawakkol Karman has praised U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent announcement to lift sanctions on Syria, calling it “the first correct decision he has made.”
In a statement on her official Facebook page, Karman expressed support for the move and extended her gratitude to “brotherly and friendly countries” that contributed to the decision — specifically naming Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey.
During his landmark visit to Saudi Arabia, President Trump made the announcement, revealing plans to lift long-standing U.S. sanctions on Syria following the collapse of the Assad regime late last year. The decision, he said, was made after consultations with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“Syria, they’ve had their share of travesty, war, [and] killing in many years,” Trump said. “That’s why my administration has already taken the first steps toward restoring normal relations between the United States and Syria for the first time in more than a decade.”
Trump said the removal of sanctions was intended to “give [Syria] a chance at greatness” and expressed hope that the country’s new leadership would succeed in stabilizing the nation and maintaining peace. “So I say, ‘Good luck, Syria.’ Show us something very special,” he added.
In response to the U.S. move, Syria’s Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani posted on X, calling the sanctions relief “a new beginning on the path to reconstruction,” and thanked Arab partners, notably Saudi Arabia, for their support.
