Renowned human rights activist and Nobel Peace Laureate Tawakkol Karman has expressed her heartfelt support for the recent ceasefire agreement between the Israeli occupation and Hamas.
In a statement shared on her official platforms, Karman described the agreement as a vital step towards achieving peace and alleviating the suffering of the Palestinian people.
“With feelings filled with hope for achieving peace and sharing in the joy and celebration of my Palestinian brothers and sisters, I welcome the agreement between the Israeli occupation and Hamas, which brings an end to the genocidal war in Gaza,” she declared. Karman highlighted the immense toll of the fifteen-month-long humanitarian tragedy that affected over two million Palestinians, noting that the ordeal has left an indelible stain on the conscience of humanity.
Karman commended the people of Gaza for their resilience and expressed hope that the ceasefire would signal a break in the cycle of violence. “This agreement represents a break in the cycle of the brutal genocidal war and an important step towards ending the painful humanitarian suffering endured by innocent children, women, the elderly, and all civilians who paid a heavy price for this savage conflict,” she said.
She further lauded the regional and international efforts that facilitated the agreement and called for diligent work to ensure its full implementation. Karman emphasized the importance of addressing key humanitarian aspects of the agreement, including the exchange of prisoners, the urgent delivery of aid to Gaza, and the return of displaced persons. “These steps are crucial within the ceasefire framework and pave the way for a broader, lasting peace,” she remarked.
Karman expressed her hope that the agreement would mark the beginning of a process leading to a comprehensive peace resolution, ending the occupation and enabling Palestinians to establish their independent state. She called for the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of displaced persons to their homes, underscoring the need to heal the wounds of war and restore dignity to the lives of the Palestinian people.
“These sacrifices, along with their belief in justice, freedom, and dignity, make the resilient Palestinian people among the most steadfast in history, deeply committed to their land and ready to defend it,” she stated.
At this critical juncture, Karman urged nations, organizations, and communities to intensify their efforts to foster dialogue and lay the foundations for a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. She highlighted the necessity of justice, self-determination, and human rights as pillars for a brighter future in the region and the world.
“Let us make this agreement the beginning of a new era, where Palestinian rights are respected,” Karman urged. She called on major nations and the global community to recognize that peace in the Middle East is contingent on ending the Israeli occupation and upholding the Palestinian people's right to live peacefully on their land within the 1967 borders.
In closing, Karman paid tribute to the unyielding spirit of Gaza, noting that while the genocidal war has ended, the resilience of its people remains unbroken. “It is time to address the Palestinian issue, and for the entire world to stand in reverence for the Palestinian people's struggle, their belief in their just cause, and their right to liberation from occupation,” she affirmed.
