Nobel laureate accuses US and UK of enabling Houthi takeover
Prominent human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Tawakkol Karman has accused the United States and United Kingdom of enabling the Houthi rebel group to seize control of parts of Yemen.
In a recent statement, Karman stated that if it were not for the American and British embassies, the Houthi "terrorist group" and their leader Abdulmalik al-Houthi would not have been able to rule any part of Yemen for even a single day. Karman emphasized that this is the undeniable truth, stating "This is the reality that is difficult to refute."
The Houthis, a Zaidi Shia-led rebel movement, have been in conflict with the internationally-recognized Yemeni government since 2014 when they seized the capital Sanaa. Since then, they have consolidated control over much of northern Yemen, leading to a devastating civil war.
Karman, the well-known international human rights activist who played a leading role in the uprising against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, has been a vocal critic of both the Houthis and the foreign powers she believes have empowered them.
The comments come as the conflict in Yemen enters its ninth year, with millions facing acute food insecurity and the risk of famine. The United Nations has described the situation in Yemen as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
