Karman: Al-Mayahi’s Release Exposes Scale of Houthi Abuses Against Journalists
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights advocate Tawakkol Karman stated that the release of writer Mohammed al-Mayahi, after a year and a half of detention and enforced disappearance in prisons run by the Houthi militia, stands as a stark reminder of the systematic violations inflicted on journalists and opinion holders.
In a statement published on her official Facebook page, Karman described the prolonged deprivation of liberty over peaceful expression as a grave crime that is not subject to any statute of limitations. She stressed that silencing dissent through detention and enforced disappearance constitutes a direct assault on fundamental freedoms and human dignity.
Karman further asserted that those responsible for torture and repression in Yemen will ultimately be held accountable, emphasizing that impunity cannot endure indefinitely and that justice remains an inescapable obligation under international law.
