Tunisia’s low voter turnout in recent elections is referendum against Kais Saied
The Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist, Tawakkol Karman, has considered the low participation rate in the Tunisian elections on December 17th as a popular rejection of the current President Kais Saied and his political project.
Tawakkol Karman has launched a harsh criticism of Kais Saied, noting that his stay in power poses a threat to the security and stability of Tunisia, urging the political parties and elite, civil society organizations and the army to assume their responsibility.
Tunisia has been experiencing a suffocating political and economic crisis since the president began imposing exceptional measures, including the dissolution of the Judicial Council and Parliament, in addition to passing a new constitution for the country on July 25 and bringing the election date to December 17.
Such measures were seen as a coup against the 2014 constitution (the constitution of the revolution) and a consolidation of the absolute individual rule.
