Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights advocate, Tawakkol Karman, said that women in Yemen are fighting for the future generations, emphasizing that the Arab Spring has stood up for women and their rights.
In an interview with Spain’s Vanity Fair magazine, Mrs. Karman pointed out that the Arab Spring has represented a great victory for women in the region, who have emerged as important figures when leading the revolution and participating in the political process.
"Despite the counterrevolution and the coup that led to the collapse of everything, women still believe that this is temporary, trusting in the future and working for next generations,” she added.
She pointed out that to achieve this a high price is required, stressing that women are ready to pay the cost because they have no choice but to pursue the path of peace and justice.
Karman has called on the international community to stop the tyranny of dictatorships, support people in their struggle for democracy, and promote religious diversity.
In response to a question about arms sales agreements between Saudi Arabia and Spain and how such types of agreements affect countries in the West and the Arab dictatorships, Karman mentioned that in order to eliminate terrorism, dictatorships should be stood up to because “terrorism and dictatorships are two sides of one coin.”
