Tawakkol Karman Foundation prepares to open Belqees Educational Complex in Taiz
Tawakkol Karman Foundation is finalizing preparations for the grand opening of the "Belqees Educational Complex" in the Al-Mudhaffar district of Taiz, located in southwest Yemen. The facility, fully funded by the foundation, is slated to open by the end of September 2024.
The complex, set to be handed over to the local authorities in Taiz, includes a school for the deaf and a general education school for elementary and secondary students. With over 30 classrooms, administrative offices, teacher lounges, two archives, libraries, and three state-of-the-art laboratories, the Belqees Educational Complex is poised to become a beacon of hope for the children of Taiz.
Initiated in November 2023, this project aims to transform the educational landscape, addressing the challenges posed by years of conflict which have left nearly 2.5 million Yemeni children out of school, according to UN estimates.
The school's section dedicated to deaf students stands out as a pioneering effort, offering education from first grade through high school. It is equipped with the latest scientific laboratories, computer labs, and an extensive library to support a comprehensive learning experience.
Constructed under challenging conditions, the Belqees Educational Complex adheres to modern standards, exemplifying the foundation’s commitment to innovative and impactful civil and developmental work.
In 2023, Tawakkol Karman Foundation also completed several notable educational projects, including the construction of Al-Salam Elementary and Secondary School in Aqroud, Taiz, the Nashwan Al-Himyari Elementary School in Marib, and the establishment of the Saadia Center for Adult Literacy in Shabwa. Additionally, the foundation rehabilitated the "Hun" initiative's facility for teaching sign language in Aden, built Belqees Elementary School in Shabwa, and revamped the Al-Amal Center for training individuals with special needs in Marib.
The foundation remains dedicated to being a leading global model in civil and peacebuilding efforts, focusing on community development, education, health, economic empowerment, and women's leadership, all while respecting cultural specificities.
Promoting democracy, good governance, and human rights is integral to the foundation’s mission to enact tangible change and foster progressive thought.
